Bridging method and knowledge: How PRINCE2 Project Management complements bodies of knowledge

PRINCE2 Project Management, the APM Body of Knowledge (APM BoK 8), and the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) - Eighth Edition are all highly respected approaches to project management.

But there are core differences that would be helpful for managers to understand, especially those new to the role or looking to make organizational improvements.

APM BoK and PMBOK Guide are bodies of knowledge and explain what good project management looks like - focusing on the knowledge, skills and behaviours required. PRINCE2 Project Management, by contrast, is a method which defines how projects should be governed, controlled, and executed.

Understanding this distinction is critical for individuals and organizations deciding how to embark on project delivery and ensure consistency within and between projects, manage risk, and scale project management capability.

Key differences

To delve a little deeper, APM BoK and PMBOK Guide provide broad frameworks of knowledge and competencies. They help project professionals understand the disciplines required for successful delivery, including governance, planning, stakeholder engagement, risk management, scheduling, leadership, and value delivery. Their strength lies in flexibility. Organizations and project managers can adapt the guidance to suit different industries, project types, and organizational cultures.

PRINCE2 Project Management provides managers with a complete method to run a project. While the method - as one of its key principles states - needs tailoring to suit each project, there is less need to design project governance and controls from scratch. Fundamentally, PRINCE2 Project Management is flexible, ensures consistent, well-governed delivery at pace.

Lack of an enterprise-wide method can breed inconsistency

As APM BoK 8 and PMBOK Guide intentionally avoid prescribing a single way of running projects, managers need to interpret how the guidance should be applied consistently across the organization.

For example, two project managers working within the same company may follow PMBOK Guide or APM guidance using entirely different governance structures, reporting methods, escalation routes, and project controls. Over time, this variation can introduce ambiguity, make projects harder to compare, and increase delivery risk.

Conversely, PRINCE2 Project Management transforms broad guidance into an operational method for project management. It defines a repeatable framework built around stage-based processes, clearly defined responsibilities, management of products, project tolerances and controls - and the pivotal decision points for tracking progress, success and a change of course.

The method gives organizations the defined controls and decision points they need to reduce ambiguity that can come from freedom of interpretation and provides consistency across the project environment.

In essence, APM BoK 8 and PMBOK Guide tell you what good project management looks like; PRINCE2 Project Management provides a structured governance and management method to apply these concepts in practice.

Each of these approaches can be used successfully on its own. APM BoK 8 and PMBOK Guide provide broad capability and knowledge frameworks, while PRINCE2 Project Management provides a complete project management method. Used together, they complement one another by combining broad professional capability with a defined and repeatable way of working.

An integrated method

PRINCE2 Project Management provides an integrated method which defines and combines roles, documents, reporting structures, governance checkpoints, and escalation routes. It helps accelerate setting up and delivering projects and improves communication with stakeholders and between functional teams.

Another major differentiator is lifecycle structure. Both APM BoK 8 and PMBOK Guide discuss activities needed for planning, control, governance, and delivery, but PRINCE2 Project Management offers a structured sequence of activities and decision points. This creates clear boundaries where professionals can review progress, risks, costs, and continued business justification before committing additional investment of time or money.

A staged approach also helps to improve visibility, review and control of risk. Instead of projects running until major issues occur, the method uses a governance structure that regularly reviews progress. This means small issues are highlighted before becoming big problems. This can be applied across variables of time, scope, quality and cost, and can also be used to ensure the project will still deliver the intended value.

But perhaps most importantly, it can be used to keep the project moving and can be tailored to the scale of the project. It’s a common misconception that the method’s governance structure will hinder progress. However, today’s version is designed so that governance is inherent to the project design and delivery, not a blocker to progress and momentum.

Translating broad guidance into organizational capability

APM BoK and PMBOK Guide both focus on developing professional competence so that the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to manage projects effectively are in place. But neither prescribes how this is done, which can lead to pockets of people in an organization interpreting the guidance differently, leading to a lack of consistency and standards across a company.

PRINCE2 Project Management reduces the inconsistency risk by providing an established operating model for project delivery. Project managers can still tailor the methods they use to suit the context of the project, but they do so within a defined and tailorable framework rather than by starting from scratch each time.

Complementary rather than competitive

In a balanced project management ecosystem, APM BoK and PMBOK Guide provide the ‘what’ and ‘why’ foundations. They are open to interpretation, which can be helpful for keeping flexibility.

However, PRINCE2 Project Management provides the ‘how’, with the tools needed to introduce a repeatable approach to delivery that reduces ambiguity, lowers risk, and ensures projects are managed with clarity, control, and confidence every time.
